That was the goal,” he says, before lightheartedly acknowledging that he has achieved it. “I always wanted to be an artist to use my sunglasses whenever I want. “I always had problems in my school because I used to wear glasses in the classroom, or people would always make jokes about me because at family parties or for school parties, I always wore sunglasses at night,” Bad Bunny says. It’s an aspiration that motivated his career in a roundabout way. “I always said that when I have money I’m going to have every pair of sunglasses in the world,” he says. His current obsession with sunglasses stems from this period, too. “I always wanted to go church in shorts, or in some trend from Daddy Yankee,” Bad Bunny says. “My mom and dad would always be like, ‘You’re going to wear that to church?!’ I always had problems because I wore something crazy,” he says. Even when he was a kid growing up in Almirante Sur Barrio in Vega Baja, his clothing choices created shockwaves. He credits his mother - whom he jokingly refers to as his first stylist - for his love of overalls. Bad Bunny had his English teacher in tow-he has been working with her since December in preparation for this album cycle-and was nervous for his very first on-camera English interview, which took place last Thursday on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. He said that his old haircut, a lightning bolt buzz, worked better with bright frames, but now that he’s trying to grow his hair out, he has lately just been sticking to his prescription glasses. While bold sunglasses are a staple of his wardrobe, he wore regular gold-framed specs. His iPhone dangled from a long chain hanging around his neck for easy access.
He was dressed for the cold in a yellow beanie, which matched his yellow face mask, a beige sweatshirt, and taupe carpenter pants.
Despite the fact that his sophomore album, YHLQMDLG, would come out in just four days, he was still finalizing verses and working until the very last minute on the songs, as he always does (he told me that he thrives under pressure). He turned his temporary lodgings into a makeshift studio, which is how he usually operates when he’s making new music on the road.
